Spring Turkey Hunting, May 2nd, 04
Back to turkey hunting
Below are the results from my spring turkey hunting adventures. This turkey weighed 20 lbs 8 ounces, as you can see in the pictures below. I was a little disappointed with the length of it's beard because I shot the wrong one. This tom had only about a 5 inch beard. It was with 2 other toms that had close to 10-12 inch beards. I saw them in a field along side a draw, so I belly crawled for about 45 minutes to get in range. As I was lying in the cover I saw a hen looking right at me. I then raised my gun anticipating the toms would follow their female friend. I was right, the toms all began strutting my way as the hen made its purring sounds. I had to keep low so my head didn't stick out of the cover, so I could only see the heads of the gobblers. As the first one came in I put my sights on it and saw his head was large and it looked to be one of the big bearded turkeys I saw from the distance. I took the shot and after pacing it out, it was about 10 yards. With my 10 gauge, 3 1/2 inch mag, there was no worrying about it running off! Once I stood up, the two remaining toms looked at me with their 10" + beards practically dragging on the ground and headed for cover! I was a little discouraged that I took the first one to come my way, but I guess you got to take what you can get. Anyhow, the pictures are below, I took them myself with my camera and remote control, so some are not the best.
