Fall 2004 Archery Turkey Hunt

Back to Turkey Hunting

On November 9th, 2004 I headed out to my deerstand after work. With the recent time change, it only gives me about an hour and 15 minutes to hunt each night. I went to my spot south of Sterling, NE and set up my deer decoy; once I got there I noticed a bunch of turkeys on the hill. My interest was more towards deer, so I ignored them. Once I got the decoy set up, I got into my stand. I had not even got my arrow knocked when I heard a noise to my right. I turned to find about 15 different turkeys headed right towards me. They walked directly under my stand, so I picked the fattest one, they were all jakes, and took a shot. I hit it directly in the spine; it fluttered around for a couple seconds and died. I was very pleased with this as it was the first turkey I had successfully shot with a bow. I wasn't sure if I should call it a night since there was still about 45 minutes of light left so I climbed down from my stand and field dressed the turkey right there. I then placed it downwind about 20 yards so I did not spook any deer. After washing my hands in the nearby pond, I climbed back up into my tree.
